Chapter 37 · The Face Beneath His Face
"Get away from him, Selah. Now." Kane's voice hit the room from three different speakers at once.
I had one hand locked around the Kane in front of me. My other hand held a blade under his jaw. His skin was warm. His pulse tapped against the edge like he was daring me to press harder.
Across the ruined command room, two more Kanes stood between the broken screens. Same blond hair. Same black combat coat. Same clean, handsome face that had sold half the city on the idea that heroes still mattered.
All three lifted their hands.
All three looked at me.
"Which one of you is real?" I asked.
"The one you're threatening," the man under my knife said.
"That answer's almost cute. Try again."
"The one who knows what your contract feels like when it tears."
The Kane near the eastern console took one step forward. "Don't listen to him. He's a copy. He wants you to kill me."
"You're both saying that," I snapped.
"Because it's true," said the third Kane.
My grip tightened. The man in front of me didn't flinch, but his eyes dropped to my hand. Not the blade.
