"Move, Selah!" Kane caught the back of my coat and yanked me sideways as a bullet punched through the brick where my head had been.
I hit the pavement hard. My shoulder screamed. Kane landed over me, one hand braced beside my face, the other already reaching for the pistol strapped beneath his jacket.
"Get off me," I snapped.
"You’re welcome."
Another shot cracked above us.
Kane rolled away and fired twice toward the roofline. A shadow ducked behind a water tank. I pushed up on one knee, teeth clenched, and grabbed the knife from my boot.
"How many?" I asked.
"Three that I can see."
"That’s not what I asked."
His eyes cut to mine. Gold under the alley light. Too calm. Too clean. The kind of calm that made half the city worship him and made me want to put a blade through his perfect smile.
"At least eight," he said. "Maybe more."
"And you brought me into this?"
"I brought you out of a Bureau kill box. The assassins followed. Different problem."
"Same result. I die."
