He turned on me. "You want to have this argument now?"

"You brought me into a room full of secrets and put your hand on my throat. Seems like a great time."

"You were about to trigger a citywide surge."

"And you were about to lie to my face again."

"I wasn't lying."

His golden power sparked across his knuckles.

Mine answered before I could stop it.

The broken command table lifted off the floor.

Kane looked at it, then at me. "Drop it."

"Make me."

"Selah."

"Say please."

The table shot toward him.

He raised one hand. Gold light slammed into the metal, stopping it inches from his face. The impact knocked me backward. Kane caught my waist before I hit the floor.

For a second, I was trapped against him again, his arm locked around me, my hands braced on his chest.

"You really enjoy making me catch you," he said through clenched teeth.

"You really enjoy pretending you have a choice."

"I have a choice."

"Then let go."

His grip tightened.
