Chapter 24 · The Return: Nightmare Shadows

"Drop her, monster!" The command cracked across the cathedral square as three beams of holy light slammed into Cane's shadow chains.

The chains held.

Selena hung between them, boots scraping over the white stone, her silver robes torn at the shoulder. Light burned around her wrists. Black shadows wrapped over that light, tightening every time she fought.

"Cane!" she shouted. "Let me go!"

"You had your chance to walk away."

He pulled one finger toward himself.

The chains yanked her closer.

Selena hit his chest hard enough to knock the breath from her. Cane caught her around the waist before she fell, his palm locking against her back. Her hair brushed his jaw. Her breath hit his throat, hot and uneven.

She shoved at him.

He didn't move.

"Get your hands off me."

"Ask nicely."

"Go to hell."

"Already did. It was quieter than your cathedral."

A fourth beam struck the ground beside them. Stone exploded.
