Chapter 32 · Nightmare Resonance

"Let go of me, Cane." Selena's wrist twisted inside his grip, but the black bands around her arms tightened before she could break free. "I said let go."

"You said a lot of things before you dragged me to the altar."

"That was before."

"No. That was the truth. This is just the part where you hate hearing it back."

The Void dragged them deeper.

There was no floor beneath their feet. No sky above them. Only black space packed with pale shards of memory, each one spinning like broken glass. Selena's white cloak snapped around her legs as the shadow chains hauled her forward. Cane walked behind her, one hand locked around the chain at her throat.

He did not need to touch her. The chain listened to him.

That was the problem.

Selena pulled again. The collar pressed against her skin.

"You're hurting me."

"Good. Now you know the difference between pain and inconvenience."

Her head whipped around. Her silver eyes burned with fury, but the anger did not reach all the way down. Cane saw it. The tiny pause. The breath she swallowed too fast.

Something deeper was hiding behind her rage.

He yanked the chain once.
