"Jerry wasn't the first." Bo's fingers closed around my wrist before I could reach for him.
His smile widened. I drove my nails toward his throat. He twisted aside, but not before one claw sliced his cheek.
"Won't be the last, either," he said, wiping the blood away. "That's what you wanted to hear, isn't it? That Edith's been making mistakes for years?"
I yanked my wrist free. "What do you want?"
"For you to stop pretending you're still one of them." He nodded toward the camp. "You haven't been human since Edith put her teeth in your neck."
Her name burned down my throat.
"She said I was an accident."
"Sure she did."
Bo pulled a leather book from inside his coat. Red stains crusted the edges. He flipped it open and held it just out of reach.
"Names. Dates. Places. Edith keeps records. She always has."
Moonlight slid across the pages.
Chinese names filled the first column. Her handwriting. Neat. Careful. Cold.
My hand moved before I could stop it.
Bo snapped the book shut and tucked it against his chest. "Easy. You want to see your name, you earn it."
"Give it to me."
