The Survivor's Circle

Chapter 10 · The Place Called Korven

"Let me see that." Amy snatched the file from Mark's hands before he could close the safe.

He let her take it. Fighting Amy only made her more determined, and he was already losing track of which part of this nightmare scared him most—the file, the empty safe, or the red dot blinking inside it.

"Shit," Amy said. Her scarred fingers smudged the cheap paper. "Mark, this is—"

"I know what it is."

Daniel leaned over her shoulder. His jaw tightened as he read. "They profiled all of us. Psychological workups. Trauma indexes. They knew exactly where to press."

"Not us." Lucas stayed in the corner, arms folded. "Him. That file's about Mark. Where are ours?"

Mark turned back to the safe.

Dust coated the bottom. Nothing else.

Except for a small red dot blinking in the upper-right corner.

He froze. "That wasn't there before."

The dot blinked again.

Then it slid two inches left and stopped.

Daniel's hand went to the knife at his belt. "Is that a laser?"

"I don't know."

"Then don't stare at it. Follow it."

"That's exactly what they want." Mark stepped away from the safe.
