Chapter 21 · The Tracker Picks Amy
"Lucas."
Mark's voice came from the diner doorway. Lucas didn't turn. His palm had gone ice-cold, then started burning.
The tracker had locked on.
Not Mark.
The blue heat twisted east, toward the hospital district—and toward Amy, who had just stepped off the curb with her phone in one hand and fresh burn scars moving beneath her sleeve.
"You coming or what?" Mark called.
Lucas shoved his hand into his pocket. "Yeah. Give me a second."
"You look like hell." Mark crossed the sidewalk and lowered his voice. "What's going on?"
Forty-eight hours. That was what the Court had given him. Deliver Mark Chen, or his sister died first.
But the tracker wasn't pointing at Mark anymore.
It was pointing at Amy.
"I didn't sleep," Lucas said.
Mark studied him. He didn't reach for a weapon. He didn't threaten him. That made it worse. Mark trusted people until they gave him a reason not to.
Lucas pulled out his hand. The mark under his skin glowed faint blue, thin lines spreading across his palm like a compass.
Mark's expression changed. "What is that?"
"Something I should've shown you sooner." Lucas glanced toward the crosswalk.
