Woman of the Gallery

Chapter 11 · Untitled Chapter

The sound comes up through the house at the fourth count. I know it is four because I have spent nine nights learning this house from above, and a house will give up its distances to anyone who lies still long enough.

I am off the bed before I decide to be. The lamp is still at the quarter mark. I find the Abaya over the chair, the Shaila where it always slides to, the pin that is never where I put it, and I dress in the dark with the practice of a woman who learned long ago that being seen uncovered is a debt, and being seen slowly covered is a worse one.

The voice below is a man's, and it is not the voice of the hall. The hall has a rhythm — the door, the greeting, the coffee poured before the question, the low agreement of men who came in already agreed. This voice cuts across the rhythm at the wrong hour, and from the wrong place: the middle of the majlis carpet, standing, not the Sadr end.

He came past the outer door with nobody to announce him.
