Woman of the Gallery

Chapter 40 · Untitled Chapter

The latch had dropped with a dry, final click, cutting off the cold corridor and the memory of the gallery above. There was no sound left between the limestone walls except the faint hiss of the embers dying in the mabkhara, curling a thin ribbon of aged oud toward the vaulted ceiling.

Mansour did not move toward me. He stood beside the carved cedar paneling, his crisp white thobe falling in severe, unbroken lines to the floor, his fingers resting lightly against the dark wood. The heavy stillness about him was not hesitation; it was the quiet patience of a man whose authority had never required raised voices or sudden steps.

His dark eyes remained fixed on mine, acknowledging the sound of the closed door, the weight of the latch, and the choice that lay entirely within my hands.

I walked past the low cedar table where the leather folio rested. I picked up the clearance papers—the formal release bearing his seal, the written deed that offered me an unblemished departure and an erased name—and laid them deliberately beside the curved spout of the silver dallah. I did not tear them, nor did I push them away in anger.
