# Chapter 1: Pink System Crash

> Short drama: EP 1 | Core emotion: A cold weapon crashes for the first time under a puppy's lick

The rainy night had torn the sea-crossing bridge in two. Scrap neon tubes hung from snapped steel cables, leaking current, and the Roller Zombie came serpentining along the flooded asphalt, e-skates kicking up sheets of water, traffic cones sent flying. Two and a half meters of battle-scarred mech stood by the broken guardrail — Axel — rain sliding down matte black shoulder plates and over a curved visor crossed with a diagonal crack.

The visor locked. (╬ Ò ‸ Ó) [TARGET LOCKED]

The zombie vaulted off a curled sheet of metal. The broken neon tube swept at him like a club. Axel tilted his head; the tube grazed right past the crack and smashed through a hanging cable behind him. Blue-white arcs jumped across the deck.

He slid a step sideways, combat boot pinning a rolling length of pipe — the pipe tipped up under his weight and blocked the exact line the zombie would slide into on landing. It hit the pipe and wobbled.

(¬_¬) [ENOUGH.]

He didn't draw a weapon. He only raised his right hand and flicked his fingers. The shockwave split the curtain of rain. The zombie burst into pink-blue digital smoke. Glowing nuts, a wear-resistant pulley, and a small metal joint scattered and rolled. One nut was rolling for the storm drain; Axel bent and caught it between two fingers before it hit the water.

In the bed of a wrecked pickup behind him, a rain-sogged cardboard box lifted at one corner and slumped again. Written crooked on its side: MYSTERY PET. The visor had just shifted to a pale blue scan when a loose billboard above the truck bed tore free in the wind and came down at the box.

(⊙_⊙) [UNKNOWN MOVEMENT]

Axel surged. One hand caught the falling billboard; the other scooped the box out of the puddle. The box split open, and a small meaty paw marked with cold-blue luminous stripes clawed at the air.

Thirty centimeters tall, caked in mud and ash, two round little horns on its head — a French bulldog puppy rolled into his palm, shook its ears, and sneezed loudly. The warm body was so small he could barely cradle it, and already the wet nose was pushing up at him.

(??) [SPECIES: UNKNOWN PUPPY] [THREAT LEVEL: 0]

The puppy scrabbled up his palm in tiny steps, climbed along the mechanical fingers to the visor. A warm tongue smacked flat against the crack. Its breath fogged the scanlines; little paws tapped tiny clicks on the cold armor.

The visor flooded with pink hearts and garbled text.

(❤️ω❤️) [ERROR: HEART DETECTED] [REBOOTING...]

For the first time in two hundred years, the protocols couldn't read themselves. It wasn't damage. It wasn't intrusion. Axel froze in the rain, while the puppy tucked a neon nut under its belly and hugged it, playing.

Thunder pressed down overhead. When he rebooted, he gathered the threat-level-zero little meatball into his palm, stepped over a puddle spitting sparks, and headed down the ramp beneath the bridge toward the dark projection building of the drive-in.

The rain got heavier. Axel cupped his hand into a shallow bowl, brought that small spine out of the wind. Mud had dried into fine grains on its belly, but its breath was hot, puffing again and again into the gaps between his fingers.

The little horns flickered cold blue now and then — not like a weapon, like two small lamps that hadn't yet learned to speak. He tried to log this moment as THREAT CLEARED; halfway through, the tongue came up and licked him again, and the words scattered. The neon nut pressed against that small heartbeat, tapping on his fingerprint sensor.

The ramp was dark and slick, so with every step he tested the water with his boot tip first, then settled his weight down. Passing the leaking tubes, he turned his shoulder plate and brushed the sparks aside with his free hand, so none of them would fall on those eyes that had just licked him. The puppy gave a tiny hiccup and hugged the nut tighter.

At the bridge pier he angled his shoulder plate another inch lower, so it wouldn't snag the snapped cable. Water beaded off the cable and struck the back of his boot; he paused half a beat, confirmed nothing had hit his palm, and only then walked on.

The puppy's ear twitched in its sleep; its wet nose burrowed between his fingers and left a small patch of warmth. The visor tagged that warmth as UNARCHIVABLE. He didn't clear it. The projection building's dark shape drew a little nearer.

He pushed a traffic cone out of the path with his free hand — the cone rolled with barely a sound — and still, by reflex, pressed the puppy's head down into his palm to shield it. In the rainy night, that two-and-a-half-meter body learned for the first time to walk quietly. Not to sneak. So as not to disturb this small warm thing that had just learned to breathe in his hand.

A ring of wet lick-mark still clung to the crack. The system log refreshed the same unarchivable error over and over, as if something soft had knocked open the outermost layer of cold in the armor.
