Chapter 3 · The Chassis Nest

# Chapter 3: The Chassis Nest

> Short drama: EP 3 | Core emotion: The second the torn velvet goes down, the ruins turn into a home for the first time.

Axel set the puppy gently on the concrete. Four small paws touched the cold and immediately curled into a ball; it sneezed. The visor popped a freezing-weather icon. Wind poured through the broken window and set the curtain scraps shivering, again and again.

(O_O;) [TEMPERATURE LOW]

He dragged the server side panel he had just confiscated toward the white wall. The metal sheet was too wide and jammed between the broken sofa and the support column. He put his shoulder to the sofa; the springs snapped back and shoved him down into the wreckage.

The puppy took it for play, climbed over the knee guard onto his chest, slid along the shoulder plate, and landed in his open palm. The visor went from speechless to a restrained smile.

(¬¬) [FOCUS.]

The sofa finally slid aside. He pried a scrap of cushion foam out of an old seat, then reached for the torn dark-red velvet on the backstage crossbeam. The curtain was caught high up. He stepped onto an iron crate; the crate's wheels slipped; one hand seized the beam, the other shielded the puppy that had come running back, and he hung there in midair like a pendulum.

The puppy, delighted, clamped its teeth on the hanging corner of cloth and hauled. The curtain ripped loose, and man and dog and velvet all rolled down together into a pile of soft dust.

(¯▽¯) [MATERIAL ACQUIRED]

The plasma welder cut the corner guards and welded them to the base. A spark drifted toward the velvet, and the puppy immediately scrabbled at the cloth corner with its front paws. Axel snuffed the spark out with a sweep of his palm, scooped the puppy behind himself, and bent back to the weld. The sparklight jumped once across the wet tip of its nose.

The mat was barely laid down before the puppy seized a corner in its teeth and backed away, treating the rag as a tug-of-war toy.

(>_<) [NOT THE BLANKET.]

He did not dare pull hard, and finally let go on purpose. The puppy tumbled backward and rolled straight into the chassis nest. It stopped, discovered the soft mat, spun a circle, scratched twice, and tucked the cloth corner under its chin. Axel crouched, packed the cotton pad into the corners, then folded the entrance a little wider.

(◕‿◕) [HOME BUILT] [DOG COMFORT: ACCEPTABLE]

The heat left over from the welding was still fading slowly along the chassis rim. Axel tested it with the back of a finger, made sure it would not burn a paw pad, then drew the mouth of the nest in another half inch.

In its sleep the puppy chewed at his knuckle without meaning to, small teeth tapping light on metal with the fine sound of gnawing a bone, and never once with force. He counted that heat as it traveled from his fingertips to the wrist sensors; the log did not know whether to file it under contact or dependence.

Rain struck the white wall, and the wall was cold; the velvet in the nest was torn; but the small belly under that rag baked one dry patch out of the scrap iron. He laid his other hand along the edge of the box to block the slanting rain that came through the window seam. His fingers were still being held. He did not pull them back.

Gradually the nest began to smell of the puppy itself, rain and mud and a faint sweetness of canned meat. Axel ran his fingertip back and forth along the tin edge of the entrance; when he found a burr, he bent it down, pressed it flat, and felt along it again. He was afraid those paw pads would hurt on it by morning.

The white wall was still empty, still nameless. But the chassis no longer felt like a trophy. It felt like a small room that could breathe. He listened to the snoring, one breath, then another, off the beat of the rain.

The log wanted to record "mission complete." He changed it to a shorter line: [STAY]. His fingers were held, so the joints could not bend. The two-and-a-half-meter mech kept that awkward posture until the rain outside the window eased a little. The torn velvet lay against the puppy's cheek. Home began in that small rough softness.

The puppy poked its head out beside the heat vent, lifted a paw to tap his metal finger, then wrapped itself around that finger and slept. Axel held the finger still and sat down with his back against the white wall. Rain came through the broken window; small snoring came out of the nest. The velvet was torn, but in the second it was laid down, this place was no longer only ruins.
