Chapter 42 · Kneel for the Luna

The ledge went out from under him with a crack like a gunshot.

Vane didn't yell. He just dropped, and his claws raked the ice and found nothing.

I was already moving.

I hit my stomach on the lip of the chasm so hard my teeth clacked. Both hands shot out. I caught his wrist, and the bandages on my arm tore open where I'd cut myself for him two nights ago.

"Seraphina." His voice came up from the dark, flat and calm. "Let go."

"Shut up."

"You'll go over with me."

"I said shut *up*."

He weighed a ton. The wind screamed up out of the gorge and tried to peel my fingers off him one by one. My blood ran down his forearm and dripped into nothing. Below us there was only white and a long, long drop.

Then a boot came down on my shoulder.

"Told you," Garrick said above me, breathing hard, silver dagger in his fist. "Told him you'd fold. Always the soft one."

He wasn't aiming for my throat. He was aiming for my hands.

I looked up at him.
