Dark academia isn't the aesthetic. It's the cover-up. When her birth family demands obedience, one woman claims the right to choose where—and with whom—she belongs.
Synopsis
In the quiet expanse of the Riyadh majlis, where the scent of oud hangs heavy between generations, my birth family enters with their ledgers and offers an erasure of every past debt if I stand and return with them tonight. They demand my obedience before the gathering, yet Saud Al-Dosari does not answer on my behalf. Instead, he sets his porcelain cup beside mine, leaves the threshold open for my own will, and allows the heavy door of the private wing to shut against the assembly outside. Protected behind that bolted lock and out of reach of my kin, my answer is sealed before dawn breaks: I do not return tonight.
