The Matter of the Finished Man

The elders gathered in the Riyadh majlis had already struck Talal Al-Zahrani from the registry, declaring his standing erased and his authority finished. Mariam Al-Khathlan was summoned only to observe his quiet surrender and report his fall to the watchful hall. But when Talal invites her across the threshold and the heavy door of the private wing locks firmly from the outside, she discovers a man untouched by ruin. Isolated from the assembly's judgment, an undeniable claim takes hold in the quiet of the locked chamber. When morning comes and the majlis demands she confirm his demise, Mariam must stand before the elders and declare that the man they wrote off has never yielded command.
